DfE School workforce census November 2024, published in June 2025.

The census collected curriculum data from secondary schools, with 81% providing usable information. Findings show some improvement in Religious Education (RE) provision: the proportion of schools reporting zero hours of RE in Year 11 fell from 16.4% to 14.4%. However, concerns remain — over 42% of schools offered less than 3% of curriculum time to RE in Year 11, often tied to small GCSE groups, leaving non-GCSE pupils without statutory RE. A widening gap persists between schools with a religious character (81.3% meeting the 3% threshold) and those without (only 23%). NATRE highlights these ongoing statutory breaches and calls for greater scrutiny, particularly through Ofsted’s toolkit on pupil entitlement.
